Considered to be the darling and one of the most prized hop varieties of the New Zealand craft beer scene. Riwaka’s abundant oil content is nearly twice that of its parent variety Saaz. This unique oil balance alongside a near 1:1 ratio of alpha to beta acids gives it a strong sweet citrus note. Riwaka is a product of Hort Research’s New Zealand Hops “hops with a difference” program and was officially released to the brewing world in 1997. Riwaka Brand 85.6-23, also referred to as D Saaz, is a triploid hop variety with “Old Line” Saaz genetics. The Saaz genetics really shines through as it has much of the same aroma, but just more of it. Riwaka has nearly double the total oils of Saaz so expect powerful citrus aromas of pink grapefruit. This fresh and zesty aroma makes Riwaka a great choice for IPA, IIPA or Hazy style’s.
